LONDON -- Roger Federer made light work of Richard Gasquet to clinch his first win at the ATP World Tour Finals, defeating the Frenchman 6-4, 6-3 on Thursday to boost his chances of making the semifinals for an 11th time. In a match pitting together two stylists, the sixth-seeded Swiss quickly took control and broke Gasquet four times in the match. The Frenchman hit only 11 winners and looked inhibited throughout. Federer, who has won a record six year-end championships, was not having a great day either -- he had 30 unforced errors -- but prevailed on important points as Gasquet converted only one of his six break chances. Federer needed five match points to earn his 43rd Finals win. "It is a big win for me and hopefully I can keep it up in the next match against Juan Martin del Potro," said Federer, chasing only his second title of the year. "Im not coming back from a serious injury, but Im coming back from a lot of sort of ups and downs, resetting things, trying out things, making sure I get my confidence back, my movement and so forth." Federer and Gasquet lost their opening round-robin matches in Group B, against defending champion Novak Djokovic and del Potro, respectively. Djokovic played del Potro late Thursday. Only once in his previous 11 Finals appearances has Federer failed to advance to the last four. A win against del Potro on Saturday will guarantee him a spot in the semis, while Gasquet became the second player to be eliminated, following David Ferrer. It was Federers 11th win in 13 matches against Gasquet, who started by winning his first service game at love before fading. The Finals are Federers last chance to win a big tournament this season. He has won only one title in the past 14 months and has only three victories against top-10 opponents in 2013, including one against del Potro in Paris last week. "Im glad I got one back in Paris because I knew we could be again in the same group, we could be playing each other," Federer said. "I think that win for me in Paris psychologically was very important. I could beat top-10 guys, I beat Richard, I beat Juan Martin last week. I truly believe my confidence is higher, and thats what I need to beat the best, and Juan Martin is part of that group honestly." Fake Adidas NHL Jerseys . Next week, hell try to add to the list. Siddikur, who shot a bogey-free first round to share the lead with five others, eagled the par-5 first hole before bogeying twice and rebounding with six birdies.4) Speaking of which, if you invested time in the Cleveland Browns-Washington game, it is time to vote on the most interesting thing you saw. Was it Johnny Manziel "flipping off" the Washington bench, or the five holding penalties called against the Browns defence….in the first quarter?5) You will notice that I didnt mention the name of the Washington team. CBS analyst Phil Simms says he might do the same, while his play-by-play partner Jim Nantz feels it is not his place to "take a stance" on the controversy that will not go away. Whos right? I will only say that Nantz is, indeed, "taking a stance" by using the "R" name--hes saying he has no problem with it.6) Milos Raonics steady rise in the world tennis rankings is worthy of praise, but wheres the breakthrough victory that will signal the dawn of true greatness? The two views of Raonic are that it is inevitable, and that it will never come.7) It is time to tell MLB commissioner Rob Manfred how to save time and make games shorter. Are you with me in admitting that the appeal of the "sport without a clock" has waned?8) So lets begin with the toughest question--Should baseball actually use a clock to make the pitcher deliver the ball to home plate within 12 seconds of receiving it in his glove? The answer here is "yes", because the "discretion of the umpire" is a phrase that doesnt serve baseball well in any application.9) For instance, umpires can be encouraged to call more strikes, which usually means theyre supposed to call "high strikes", but they dont. Isnt it time for strict adherence to one strike zone, never mind the idea that umpires have their own strike zones? And, that strike zone, should you need a reminder, is between the top of the knees and the mid-point between the batters pants and the top of his shoulders, as he is about to swing.10) Batters arent supposed to step out of the batters box with both feet. So why are they allowed to do that for just about any reason, or for no reason? Stop them with called strikes.11) Mound conferences. The manager or pitching coach is allowed one trip, after which the pitcher must be changed. Whats wrong with applying the same restriction to catchers and infielders?12) Intentional walks. Why not save the time it takes to deliver four wide pitches and just wave the batter to first base?13) Video review. Baseball has lost its way with the introduction of challenges to umpires calls. Their number must be limited, and so too, the length of time they consume. Did it not occur to MLB that the only valid criticism of this innovation would be if the umps wore the headsets for more than, say, 90 seconds?14) And now it is time to offend the purists (I used to be one myself), or have I done that allready? If the reason for this overhaul is to shorten games, there must be something done when an extra-inning game stretches to the ridiculous length of five or six hours.dddddddddddd Draw the line where you think it belongs--Ill pick 12 innings--and for all innings beyond that, softballs international tie-breaker applies. (Each half-inning begins with a runner at second base).15) Kudos to the Montreal Alouettes for battling the Saskatchewan Roughriders to the very end of last Saturdays game, won 16-11 by the defending Grey Cup champs. But is there anyone not named Tom Higgins who would have done what the Montreal coach did after cutting Saskatchewans lead to two points with just over three minutes to play? What Higgins did was to order a one-point convert following the Als lone touchdown, when a successful two-point try would have evened the score. Ah, but what if the two-point play failed? Well, Montreal would have trailed by two, needing a field goal to win, which basically was what Montreal needed if the deficit was a single point. In summary, there was much to gain and little or nothing to lose by trying for two, and Higgins didnt.16) How good are the Calgary Stampeders? Well, if youre not willing to answer by saying "Theyre the best team in the CFL", try this: "Theyre good enough to be 6-1 without the services of the leagues top player in 2013, Jon Cornish". And wont it be good to see Cornish in action again on Sunday in Ottawa? (Ya, okay, perhaps not if youre Ottawa).17) Do you want the latest reason why its so frustrating being a Chicago Cubs fan? In their recently-completed four-game series against the Mets, the Cubs managed to hold the Mets to 16 hits, exactly four per game. And they split the series.18) Heres a stat that baseball needs to adjust--the "hold", which is awarded to a relief pitcher if he takes the mound with his team leading by three runs or less and departs without surrendering the lead. On Sunday, St. Louis closer Trevor Rosenthal walked three batters and was responsible for two of them crossing the plate, but because that still left the Cardinals in front for a one-run victory, Rosenthal, blown save and all, got his first "hold" of the season. What he got that he deserved was "the hook".19) If there must be a hockey question in August, here it is--what is the name of the Carolina Hurricanes head coach? (I had to look it up. Why dont you do the same, because the point of this exercise is lost if his name appears here. Or maybe you know it, which puts you ahead of me, unless you can name the NHLs five rookie general managers. It took me a couple of minutes, but hey, its August).20) Will the Los Angeles Clippers continue to employ cheerleaders, or would owner Steve Ballmer suffice? ' ' '

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Baltimore Orioles earned a victory in court in their dispute with the Washington Nationals over annual broadcast payments. A New York Supreme Court judge on Monday granted an extension in the injunction preventing Major League Baseball from forcing the Orioles to pay the Nationals higher payments from their joint ownership in the network that televises the teams games. The Orioles own a controlling stake in MASN, which broadcasts Nationals games as a result of an agreement when the team moved from Montreal to Washington. The Nationals want higher annual rights payments, and the network isnt willing to pay the desired amount. On June 30, an MLB arbitration panel ruled the Orioles owed the Nationals an additional $20 million annually. The Orioles have questioned whether the panel was impartial and want the case decided in the courts. The injunction prevents the imposition of additional payment until the issue is resolved. There was the requisite hockey sense demanded from the countrys very best and of equal importance, if not more so, was the ability to burn up and down the ice, the latter of significant consequence on the generally unfamiliar international ice surface. "I think we have a really good mix of players here that bring a lot of elements," said Doug Armstrong, the Blues GM and a member of Team Canadas management team, "but the one element they all have is skating ability." Its likely why someone like 34-year-old Joe Thornton – a member of the gold medal winning squad in 2010 and top point producer again this season, but certainly not the fleetest of foot – was not named to the team this time around, replaced by explosive types such as Matt Duchene and Jamie Benn. In fact, the Canadian roster in Vancouver featured a number of players who were probably never be described as quick – Jarome Iginla, Brendan Morrow, Dany Heatley, Eric Staal – but could get around just fine, at that point in their respective careers, on the NHL-sized ice. "I think you see some players that can play on the North American ice [that are] not quite as fleet of foot, but the space they have to get to they can get to quicker and hold it longer. From the corners to the front of the net the distance isnt as great. I think its a different style," Armstrong said. "A bigger man can have success maybe in the North American game thats a little harder to have here." Absent is a single player on this roster who cant get up and down the ice effectively. Quickly adjusting to the larger international ice surface – 15 additional feet wide – will be among the greater challenges facing the Canadians as they look to become the first back-to-back gold medal winning squad in the NHL era of the Olympics. All of which explains why swiftness on skates – not to mention the ability to move the puck with equal speed and precision – was such a fundamental asset in the selection process. Canada managed to win its first gold in 50 years on the Olympic size ice in Salt Lake City, but fell badly short four years later in Torino – they finished a distant seventh. Though other gold medal hopefuls face a similar challenge – with the vast majority of talent migrating to Russia from the NHL – the Canadians (and Americans certainly) will be required to climb a somewhat higher hill, having only played on the 200 by 100 foot surface sparingly. "Theres no question," said head coach Mike Babcock, "when youve grown up your whole life playing on one surface youre probably pretty comfortable with that surface. I know we are in North America. So theres a little adjustment, well get it worked out." One adjustment Babcock will seek is shorter shift lenngths: from the NHL standard of 45 seconds down to 40 seconds with more space to cover and ground potentially to protect.ddddddddddddHe and the coaching staff, which includes big ice expert and former Swiss National Team coach Ralph Krueger, will also stress the need to attack inside on the offensive end, rather than linger on the perimeter as an opponent would prefer. "As much wider [as] the rink is you still want to play an up and down, north and south game and I think its the strength of our team to be able to play at a high speed, high tempo, all four lines," said John Tavares, who played on the bigger ice in Switzerland during the last lockout. "I think thats where were going to be at our best." Other immediate challenges facing Canada (and just about every country) include the required role alterations demanded of NHL stars and energy-sapping jet lag, an adjustment most countries will face in some way or another. "We can talk about the size of the ice surface," said Yzerman, "but I think its adjusting to playing a lesser role. Youve got forwards that are used to playing 21-22 minutes a game that are going to play 10 and 11 and defencemen that are used to playing 27 playing 18. Thats a huge adjustment for them all." Stars and scoring champs are fighting for even the slightest bit of ice-time. Martin St. Louis was the oldest Art Ross winner in NHL history last season (he was 37) and has kept the Lightning afloat save the injured Steven Stamkos again this season, but he finds himself grinding amongst 14 forwards for an opportunity. He and Duchene, a fellow first-timer were on the outside of the forward lines on the opening day of practice at Bolshoy Ice Dome. "When I talked to St. Louis in Tampa I told him he was one of 14 forwards and that he has to grab his piece," said Babcock. "Thats what weve told everyone; theyve got to find a way to grab their piece." Babcock was flipping through lineups and line combinations from the triumphant experience in Vancouver alongside assistant coach Claude Julien and came to a very simple conclusion: things can change in a hurry. Mike Richards for instance, rose from the 14th forward to a key member of an effective trio which included Jonathan Toews and Rick Nash. "Its a competitive environment and we expect our guys to compete for their ice-time," Babcock said. The Canadian head coach got creative in his attempts to quell the effects of jet lag. Players were given a special package for the plane ride over to Sochi, a kit that included eye covers, ear plugs, melatonin, vitamins, and compression socks to reduce the possibility of swelling in the feet. They were also told to sleep no longer than four hours (some did anyway) and stay up until midnight if possible. All to curtail the effects of the drastic change in time zones. "Keep the players up," Babcock said of his goals for a practice that begin at 8pm local time. "We thought if we got some exercise at this time of night we had a better chance of staying up til midnight." ' ' '

Olympic ice dance champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir won the short dance at Skate Canada International on Friday night, despite a couple of noticeable and uncharacteristic errors. But instead of focusing on the flaws, Moir was soaking up the moment. "It was emotional," Moir said. "We talk about this. . . its about enjoying the journey, enjoying the process, and were at great moments in our careers right now. Were healthy, were strong, we still think were young -- maybe the rest of the skating world doesnt -- but its a beautiful thing and were really enjoying it. "We just looked at each other and its one of those moments where youre just happy to be where you are." Virtue and Moir scored 73.15 points for their foxtrot and quickstep to music by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, edging fellow Canadians Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje by less than three points. Americans Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue were third. Virtue and Moir havent officially confirmed this is their final season, although theyre expected to retire after the Sochi Olympics. Virtue, from London, Ont., saw Moir struggling to contain his emotion and said she was inspired the skater from Ilderton, Ont., whos been her partner for the better part of two decades. "I was pretty nervous and its easy to get wrapped up in the minor details, and youre so focused on how were executing every step," Virtue said. "I just looked at Scott and he looked a bit emotional and I think it connected us in a special way, and made it that much more special.dddddddddddd" Their trouble came on the twizzles -- sort of travelling side-by-side spins that have be completely in synch. Theirs werent. Virtue said because shes struggled with them in three performances already this season, they might look at moving them to a different part of their short program. "Its certainly not something we want to risk moving forward but well look at that when we get home," she said. The night marked a personal best (70.35) for Weaver and Poje, whove long skated in the shadows of Virtue and Moir. Skating to music from "42nd Street," Weaver, from Toronto, and Poje, from Waterloo, Ont., Canadas perennial runners-up had no noticeable bobbles. They watched Virtue and Moirs performance intently on a TV screen. Weaver looked stricken when the Olympic champs made their glaring twizzles error, and reached out to touch the screen with a sympathetic "Ohhh." "Tessa and Scott are Olympic champions, theyre everything in a team that we strive to be, and while their errors are quite uncharacteristic, they are to me the quintessential ice dance team of our time," Weaver said. "So no it doesnt make any less excited about our own score, were just happy to be in the same sentence as them." Skate Canada is the second of six stops on figure skatings Grand Prix circuit. The top six entries in each discipline qualify for the Grand Prix Final, Dec. 5-8, in Fukuoka, Japan. ' ' '

The Swede, currently ranked third, has been battling the flu this week and didnt get in any practice time on the course at Genzon Golf Club before the opening round. "Im not throwing up but Im not too keen on eating and my energy levels arent the best," he said. "Its not easy to play a golf course blind, and it definitely costs a couple of shots when you havent seen it, or havent played it." Chinese 15-year-old Guan Tianlang, who became the youngest player to make the cut at the Masters last year, was level with Stenson at 71. "I think today I played pretty consistently. My putting feels good, but needs a couple changes so if tomorrow I got more birdies, will keep me going," he said. Quiros has six wins on the European Tour, but hasnt had a top-3 finish in the past three seasons. The Spaniard said hes worked on improving his putting this year and the results are starting to come -- he finished tied for fifth at the Joburg Open in February and then joint 13th last week at the Malaysian Open. "You cant see it yet on the rankings, but I have been playing better," said the Spaniard, ranked a lowly 240th in the world.dddddddddddd Dyson, who also has six wins on tour but none since 2011, said he played some of his best golf in a long time during his round, sinking six birdies to go with one bogey. "I really didnt miss a shot. I missed two fairways just, and didnt miss a green so gave myself a lot chances, which is always nice," he said. Stenson is coming off a banner year that saw him become the first golfer to win the European Tours Race to Dubai and the U.S. PGA Tours FedEx Cup in the same season. Hes gotten off to a slow start this season, however, with his best finish a tie for 14th at the Masters. According to the European Tour, Stenson can nudge Woods out of the top spot in the rankings this week only if wins the tournament and there are no withdrawals in the field to affect the maximum number of points hed receive. The Swede had back-to-back birdies on his first two holes, but then struggled to find the fairway and greens down the stretch, making four bogeys. He blamed the state of the rough for some "horrific lies." "I took a six on 13 by just being off the green -- you cant even get the ball hardly on the green to save par. I think its a course that when the rough gets that silly in certain areas, it kind of takes away a lot of skill," he said. Poulter is also looking for a boost, which he typically gets in Asia. Hes won three titles here, including the 2012 HSBC Champions at Mission Hills in Shenzhen. He had four birdies and narrowly missed a couple others, including a 6-footer on the 9th that would have moved him into a share of the lead. "Coming from Augusta National, where (the greens) are quite quick, you come here and the greens are very slow," he said. "Even the putts that look downhill, down grain, are just not very quick and it takes some adjusting to." ' ' '

"We are delighted to announce that Randy Ferbey, Patrick Huerlimann and Eigil Ramsfjell are being inducted into the World Curling Hall of Fame," said World Curling Federation president Kate Caithness. "All of these athletes have been ambassadors of our game, both on and off the ice. Ferbey won world titles in 1989, 2002, 2003, 2005 and was a silver medallist in 1988. He won national titles in each of those years and in 2001. Ferbey, 54, will be honoured at next years world championship in Halifax. "This came out of nowhere for me -- Im blown away to be honest," said Ferbey. "Im really appreciative to the Canadian Curling Association for their support, as well as to the World Curling Federation. I never played the game to earn accolades like this. "I always considered it a team game and I really want to share this with all the great teammates I had over the years. I could not have done it without them." Huerlimann won Olympic gold at the 1998 Nagano Games. He won world silver in 1989 and bronze in 1996 and 1999. He also guided Switzerland to a silver medal at the 2003 world playdowns. Huerlimann was a WCF executive board member for seven years and served as vice-president from 2010 through 2012. "This great news came out of the blue," he said. "I am delighted to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and very thankful to the World Curling Federation. For the past 40 years, curling has been a major part of my life on and off the ice. Ramsfjell won the gold medal when curling was a demonstration sport at the 1988 Calgary Olympics and earned bronze at the Nagano Games 10 years later. "My curling career has given me many highlights and I have been grateful for every one of those experiences," he said. "However, this recognition is truly outstanding. I am deeply honoured to be joining some of the greats of previous generations and must thank the Norwegian Curling Association for nominating me and the World Curling Federation for inducting me into the Hall of Fame." Ferbey won his first two national titles as a third for Pat Ryans team. His next four Brier wins came as skip of the "Ferbey Four" rink, which included Dave Nedohin, Scott Pfeifer and Marcel Rocque. Ferbey, who threw third rocks for that team, shares the record for most Brier wins as a skip (four) with Ernie Richardson and Kevin Martin. SEATTLE -- Justin Smoak hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning and the Seattle Mariners beat Kansas City 4-0 on Tuesday night, putting the Royals post-season hopes in serious jeopardy. Mariners rookie left-hander James Paxton (3-0), making just his fourth major league start, worked a career-high seven innings, allowing four hits, walking none and striking out a career-high 10. The playoff picture looks as bleak as it can be for the Royals (83-74). They are four games behind Cleveland for the second wild-card berth with five games to play. The Royals three competitors for the two wild-card spots -- Tampa Bay, Texas and Cleveland -- all won Tuesday. The Royals need to win every game and have both the Indians and Rangers completely collapse. It was the 13th shutout for the Mariners and the ninth time the Royals have been shut out. Seattle touched Bruce Chen (8-4) for a run in the first when Brad Miller reached on an infield single followed by Abraham Almontes single to centre. Almonte has reached base in all his 18 games to start his career, 16 with a hit. With one out, Kendrys Morales singled to left, driving in Miller. Chen worked five innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. He walked three and struck out five. The Royals could not respond against Paxton. They put together two singles in the first inning but a double play eased him out of trouble. He didnt allow more than one baserunner in any inning after that and at one point he retired 12 straight. The Mariners blew the game open in the fifth with three runs -- all with two outs. Morales, who had three hits, doubled to deep centre. Franklin Gutierrez walked and Smoak hit a 0-2 fastball over the wall in left field. Smoak has 19 home runs but it was just his second right-handed. The other was Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels. Finally, on the back nine, I got more comfortable with being back playing again and just started hitting golf shots. It was a good day. I almost wish we didnt have darkness and I could keep going since I finally got into a rhythm there. Munoz was solid throughout, hitting 17 of 18 greens in regulation, and closed with consecutive birdies to make it a three-way tie at the top. The only green she missed was at the par-4 13th, her approach shot coming up just a few feet short and rolling off the front.I gave myself a lot of opportunities and I made them, too, she said. If I didnt hit a really good shot, I made a couple nice 5-, 6-footers for par, so that was nice. ' ' '

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- After police and fire investigators determined the second worker death at the new $1.2 billion San Francisco 49ers showcase stadium was an accident, officials said the projects accelerated construction plan would begin again on Tuesday. A delivery truck driver was crushed early Monday by a bundle of rebar being unloaded from his truck. An ambulance rushed the severely injured worker to a local hospital, where he died, according to a spokesman for Turner/Devcon, the construction company building Levis Stadium. The spokesman, Jonathan Harvey, said state workplace safety officials said Monday that while their investigation is ongoing and could take months, "the jobsite has been deemed safe and is permitted to reopen." The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroners Office identified the man as Edward Erving Lake II, 60, of Vacaville. He was an employee of Gerdau Ameristeels Napa Reinforcing Steel facility, a subcontractor working on the stadium, Gerdaus spokeswoman Kimberly M. Selph said. In a statement, the 49ers said their "sincerest thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers affected by this tragedy." The team also said there were plans to have support on-site Tuesday to help workers with their emotions following the tragedy. The stadium is in Santa Clara, about 40 miles south of Candlestick Park, which it is replacing. Construction is slated to be finished in July, and officials say the accelerated work plan involves a highly co-ordinated scheme to maximize efficiency and avoid delays. Construction firm investigators also were on-scene Monday, to see what could have been done to prevent the deadly accident. An elevator mechanic, 63-year-old Donald White, was also killed at the stadium in June when he was struck by a counterweight while working in a shaft. White worked as an elevator mechanic for more than 40 years and was employed by Schindler Elevator Corp. An investigation into his death by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is underway. The stadium project is expected to open its doors just in time to host the 50th Super Bowl, in 2016, in the heart of the Silicon Valley. The airy, open stadium would have the largest lower bowl in the league, ensuring the 68,500 fans are close to the action. Olympic hockey management team have been making what he called "ghost rosters" since August.MADRID - The president of La Liga said Tuesday that Catalan clubs like Barcelona and Espanyol would be excluded from Spains top tier should the region succeed in its push for independence from Spain.Javier Tebas said the countrys sports law entitles only one non-Spanish territory Andorra to legally participate in the league or other official competitions. The pro-independence government of Catalonia is pushing for a referendum to see how many of the wealthy northeastern regions inhabitants would like to secede. The plan is overwhelmingly opposed by Spains parliament, where the government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has a large majority.A debate held in parliament in April vetoed the regions request to hold a referendum by 299 votes against to 47 in favour.Despite the veto, the Catalan government says it will hold a non-binding referendum on Nov. 9, a decision that has led to furious arguments about the ballots legality. The government argues that such a move would violate the Spanish Constitutions stipulation that only the national government can call referendums on sovereignty and that all Spaniards are entitled to vote in such a ballot.Whatever the outcome, the fact that Andorra a tiny state straddling the Pyrenees Moountains that separate Spain from France is allowed to play in the league creates a precedent that could permit the Catalan clubs eventual inclusion.ddddddddddddTebas said that for clubs from an independent Catalonia to be included in La Liga would require a modification of the law that would have to be approved by parliament. For such a modification to be given the go-ahead, wed have to wait and see if the affected sector would agree to such a change, Tebas said, referring to the likely reaction in the rest of Spain to any secession by Catalonia.Separatist sentiment has surged in Catalonia in recent years following Spains refusal to give the region more autonomy and fiscal powers. The push is Europes latest secession attempt following a Scottish independence poll last month on separating from Britain which resulted in a No vote.Catalonia, with some 7.5 million inhabitants, is Spains wealthiest region. Barcelona vies with Real Madrid for supremacy on the football field domestically and internationally with both clubs being listed among the worlds richest.Tebas said the financial consequences of a split in La Liga caused by a Catalan secession would be a disaster to the development of the football industry. TSN.ca presents its latest weekly power rankings for the 2013-14 Barclays Premier League staff. Rankings were weighted evenly between separate lists made by TSN Radio host and soccer analyst Gareth Wheeler as well as TSN.cas soccer editors. 1. Manchester United (LW-2, 0-0 draw with Chelsea) Despite starting three offensive threats, United was not able to crack Chelsea in a scoreless home draw. Wayne Rooney was one of those starters and though he didnt find the net, was great in passing and movement. They were not pressed into defence very often during the game but were solid when they had to make a play. 2. Chelsea (LW-3, 0-0 draw with Manchester United) Without a striker on the pitch it wasnt hard to see Jose Mourinhos plan heading into Old Trafford. He played for a point and Chelsea left Manchester with a scoreless draw. Oscar did create a few chances, but they were not converted into goals. Fernando Torres eventually entered the game but was not able to change the outcome or liven up the contest. 3. Tottenham (LW-4, 1-0 win over Swansea City) One goal was enough for Spurs to defeat Swansea and earn six points in their first two contests. Roberto Soldado once again took care of the scoring for the North London side, when he fired home from the penalty spot. No Gareth Bale again for Tottenham, but they were able to control the action without him for a second week in a row. 4. Liverpool (LW-5, 1-0 win over Aston Villa) Amazing to think, six points from two games is Liverpools best start since 2008. For the second successive match, Daniel Sturridge led his side to a 1-0 victory, this time over Aston Villa. Simon Mignolet was sharp once again in the goal for Liverpool. 5. Manchester City (LW-1, 3-2 loss to Cardiff City) With captain Vincent Kompany on the sideline with an injury, Citys defence fell apart defending corners in the second half as they lost 3-2 to Cardiff City. Keeper Joe Hart made a crucial mistake on the first of two goals by Fraizer Campbell. Sergio Aguero especially had a quiet game going forward, as did most of Manchester Citys offensive threats. 6. Southampton (LW-8, 1-1 draw with Sunderland) The Saints were headed to their first loss of the season at the hands of Sunderland when Jose Fonte changed the script in the 88th minute earning his side a 1-1 draw. In a back and forth battle, the late equalizer was a fair result for Southampton. 7. Arsenal (LW-15, 3-1 win over Fulham) The Gunners made a statement of intent in their 3-1 victory over Fulham. Lukas Podolski scored twice and Olivier Giroud added another as Arsenal looked as good this week as they did bad last week. Outside of the goal scorers, Arsenal showed good push from their entire lineup as well as looked solid on defence. 8. West Ham (LW-6, 0-0 draw with Newcastle)Two clean sheets to open the season for the Hammers as they earned a scoreless draw on the road against Newcastle. Keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen was almost beaten with one of the final kicks of the game, but a ball off the post and then over the net meant that West Ham left with a point for their efforts. 9. Aston Villa (LW-7, 1-0 loss to Liverpool) After opening with a big win over Arsenal, Villa has been pegged back to reality by Chelsea and now Liverpool, as they fell 1-0. Despite not finding the mark, Christian Benteke was strong once again for Aston Villa who have faced a very tough opening schedule. 10. Everton (LW-9, 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion) Two draws from two games for Everton, as they once again dominated in a game they were not able to win. Marouane Fellaini came the closest late, as he rang one off the post. Steven Pienaar also had another great game, but the frustration continues for Roberto Martinez, as he waits for his first victory at his new club. 11. Fulham (LW-10, 3-1 loss to Arsenal) Darren Bent scored for this sixth Premier League club when he fired home for Fulham. That was the highlight of an otherwise tough day at Craven Cottage. Offensively they did force saves out of Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny and ask questions of the defence. Unfortunately, Arsenal had all the answers. 12. Stoke City (LW-12, 2-1 win over Crystal Palace) Mark Hughes earned his first victory at the helm of Stoke after Charlie Adam and Ryan Shawcross fired home within four minutes, to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace. Stoke had more of the play and the chances and in the end were deserving winners. 13. Cardiff City (LW-20, 3-2 win over Manchester City) What an occasion it was at Cardiff City Stadium as the Welsh side shocked Manchester City 3-2, earning the best win of the early season. Fraizer Campbell wrote his name into the legend with two second half goals to secure the victory. Cardiff was up for the occasion and deserved the victory they worked so hard to earn. 14. Norwich City (LW-11, 1-0 loss to Hull City) Despite playing 63 minutes with a man advantage, Norwich was not able to find an equalizer against Hull in a 1-0 defeat. Prior to the red card, Michael Turner committed a foul that give a penalty opportunity to Hull which they converted for the games only goal. 15. West Bromwich Albion (LW-13, 0-0 draw with Everton) Ben Foster was solid in the goal for West Brom, but was injured and replaced by Luke Daniels for the final 12 minutes of the game. The Baggies have yet to score a goal this season, though Shane Long had a great chance saved late in the contest. Nicolas Anelka was supposed to provide goals but he has left the club and might retire rather than return. 16. Hull City (LW-19, 1-0 win over Norwich City) The Tigers earned their first win since being promoted to the Premier League, 1-0 over Norwich. After scoring a penalty, that would turn out to be the winner, Hull was reduced to 10-men after a red card to Yannick Sagbo. They played for over an hour down a man but held on for the three points. 17. Swansea City (LW-14, 1-0 loss to Tottenham) No points from two games, finds the Swans at the bottom of the table. They were dominated by Tottenham in a 1-0 loss where keeper Michel Vorm was probably their best player on the pitch. Michu needs to find the form he arrived to the BPL with last season to get this squad going in the right direction. 18. Sunderland (LW-16, 1-1 draw with Southampton) Two minutes, plus added time, from their first victory of the season, Sunderland conceded the tying goal to Southampton in a game they had led for 85 minutes. Kieren Westwood was strong in goal for Sunderland who had chances but could not put the game away, in the end were forced to settle for their first point of the campaign. 19. Newcastle United (LW-18, 0-0 draw with West Ham) A second poor effort for the Magpies led to a scoreless draw with West Ham and increased the pressure on manager Alan Pardew. Yohan Cabaye has yet to play for Newcastle and at this point they need either his skill or monetary value to be added to this squad. 20. Crystal Palace (LW-17, 2-1 loss to Stoke City) Newly promoted and starting to fall behind the eight-ball, Palace are now one of two teams in the BPL yet to earn a point this season. Marouane Chamakhs opening marker was not enough as they fell 2-1 to Stoke City. Dwight Gayle had two late chances to produce a goal but could not rescue the point for his side. HAMILTON, Ont. -- The effort was there, but the energy was not for the Hamilton Bulldogs on Sunday. Playing their third game in as many days, the Bulldogs were a step behind from the opening faceoff and fell 4-1 to the Chicago Wolves in American Hockey League action. Despite the result, Hamilton head coach Sylvain Lefebvre had only praise for his players, who he believed had left everything on the ice over the course of a marathon weekend. "I think we ran out of gas," said Lefebvre. "We had a very tough, physical game last night, and the guys gave everything they had. "Im proud of that group. They emptied the tank, and theyve given us some pretty good hockey so far and battled right to the end." Dimitrij Jaskin and Mark Cundari both had a goal and an assist for the Wolves (23-15-4), who won their second game in as many days while Tyler Shattock and Joel Edmundson also scored. Matt Climie made 21 saves for the win. Christian Thomas had the lone goal for the Bulldogs (20-18-4) while Robert Mayer stopped 40 shots in defeat. Hamiltons offence sputtered for much of the first period, but manufactured the games first threat 11 minute in when Jordan Owens gathered the puck along the boards and found Jarred Tinordi with a centring pass in the high slot. The defenceman drew a move from Climie as he glided to his left, but snapped his shot just over the crossbar. The Wolves produced the games opening goal after Hamiltons Gabriel Dumont was penalized for interference. Chicago peppered the Bulldogs with point shots on the power play and the final one, courtesy of Brent Regner, took a deflection onto the stick of Jaskin, who easily chipped a shot over the near shoulder of Mayer at 14:25. A costly misplay by Mayer allowed the Wolves to double their lead a minute and a half later. Shattock carried the puck along the right boards and fired a weak wrist shot toward the net with teammates headed to the crease. Mayer stopped the effort, but deflected a rebound into the air, where it clipped a defender and slid past him. Chicagos lead swelled to three goals just 1:28 into the second period, with the two teams playing 4-on-4. A giveaway in the neutral zone sprung Alexandre Bolduc, Adam Cracknell and Edmundson on a three-man break, and Edmundson took the final touch on the right wing and fired a rising wrist shot past Mayer at the far post. Less than two minutes later, the Bulldogs responded on what seemed to be a harmless rush. Thomas carried the puck into the offensive zone on the left wing with his linemates alongside him, and launched a long-range wrist shot from the top of the circle that beat Climie over the shoulder at 3:24 of the second period. Hamilton appeared to make it 3-2 when a bizarre bounce off of the glass behind the net had the puck bounce off the back of Climie and into his goal. But Bulldog centreman Maxime Macenauer was judged to have touched the puck with a high stick, and the goal was disallowed. Macenauer sought a review of the play by officials, and argued that the incident could have been pivotal for his team. "It was a really close call," he said. "I felt that (the referees) should have reviewed it. Its probably a high stick, but you never know, because I felt that I might have touched it right below the cross bar. "It would have been 3-2 at that point, and it would have changed the game." A potential turning point avoided, the Wolves increased their lead with a fourth goal at 12:02. Nathan Longpre took possession of the puck below the goal line and found an unmarked Cundari with a centring pass. He reacted quickly to snap a wrist shot over the far shoulder of Mayer. Hamilton defenceman Morgan Ellis fell awkwardly into the boards midway through the period and was slow to return to the bench with an upper-body injury. He stayed on the bench for the remainder of the period, but did not return for the third. Lefebvre had not been briefed on the severity of the injury at the time of writing, but indicated that it would likely hold Ellis out of the lineup for some time. The most promising scoring chance of the third fell to Macenauer, who weaved through Chicagos defence pairing before firing a wrist shot off Climies far post. Still pressing for consolation, the Bulldogs were denied by a highlight-reel worthy save by Climie with six and a half minutes to play. Martin St. Pierre protected the puck on the left wing and threaded a pass cross-ice to Owens, whose one-time shot was snared by the sliding Climie. Chicago went 1 for 6 on the power play while Hamilton failed to score on four chances with the man advantage. China Shoes Free Shipping . -- Tiago Splitter tipped in a rebound with 2. Kessel scored a beauty in regulation and James van Riemsdyk contributed the shootout decider Friday night as Toronto scored a 2-1 win over the New Jersey Devils. Kessels goal, which opened the scoring, came on an eye-popping solo rush as the Leafs sniper skated through two Devils in the defensive zone before beating Cory Schneider between the legs at 8:12 of the third period. Kessels 10th goal of the season ended a Toronto scoreless stretch of almost 110 minutes. "Those are difference-maker goals," Carlyle said of Kessels swooping rush. "It reminded me of Frank Mahovlich -- the windup, to come back inside your own (blue-)line and attack. Thats old-time hockey. I mean real old-time hockey." Asked if he knew who Mahovlich -- a mega-star from another era who played for the Leafs, Red Wings and Canadiens -- was, Kessel later replied: "Not really." Of course the 26-year-old American was born six years after the Big M entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981. Mahovlich, now 75, later moved his field of play to the Senate, an arena most Canadians ignore. It looked like the Kessel goal might be enough until Toronto goalie Jonathan Bernier, who had been excellent hitherto, seemed to misplay a shot from the right flank from Michael Ryder, with the puck angling high off the goalies stick into the net at 15:15. Ryder got credit for his fifth of the season. "Im probably going to do that play a hundred times and, I dont know, if you ask me to do it again I probably wouldnt be able to," Bernier lamented. Kessel was in the box, with 11 second left for a slashing penalty. "Those thing happens in hockey," Carlyle said of the Bernier miscue. "There wasnt a person in the building who felt as bad as he did about giving it up. You could just see his reaction. But I thought our bench remained composed. We gathered our composure and we didnt sit back, we attacked. And we didnt stop." Added Bernier: "We showed character. We came back and won that game. It was a great team effort." Schneider, who also had a strong game, made a great save on Kessel on a Leafs three-on-one in an exciting overtime. And he stopped Torontos Mason Raymond and Kessel before van Riemsdyks goal in the shootout. Adam Henrique then fired wide for the Devils. Bernier stopped Ryder in the shootout while Travis Zajac had the Leafs goalie beat but hit the post. With the victory, Toronto heads to Boston for a Saturday night showdown with the Bruins team that ousted from the playoffs last season with an unlikely Game 7 comeback. Toronto (11-5-0) has now won five of its last seven. The Leafs were well-rested, having not played since a 4-0 loss in Vancouver last Saturday. The Devils (4-7-5) were coming off a 3-0 winn in Philadelphia on Thursday, with Martin Brodeur posting a 22-save shutout -- the 122nd of his career.dddddddddddd. New Jersey had lost its two previous games, both shutouts. "Im disappointed we didnt capitalize on our chances," said Devils coach Peter DeBoer. "We got a bounce there at the end to get a point. We had enough chances to win the game. We didnt finish enough." The Leafs power play, which came into the game fifth in the league, had failed on four previous man-advantage opportunities in the game prior to the Kessel goal. And the Leafs star had been guilty of several giveaways. The 2013 Hockey Hall of Fame Game, which drew a crowd of 19,377 that included Prime Minister Stephen Harper, featured pre-game appearances by former Devils Scott Niedermayer and Brendan Shanahan as well as Chris Chelios and Geraldine Heaney. The late Fred Shero will also be inducted as part of the class of 2013 on Monday. With centres Tyler Bozak and Dave Bolland both injured, van Riemsdyk shifted from wing to centre Joffrey Lupul and Kessel on Torontos top line. Van Riemsdyk, whose last duty at centre was at the University of New Hampshire, failed to get a shot on net but his linemates combined for 12 of Torontos 28 on the night. At times the line overelaborated, especially with the Devils in the penalty box. But it paid dividends when it counted. Bernier, who stopped 41 of 43 shots in Calgary last time out, had to be sharp to keep the Leafs in it as Toronto was outshot 35-28 -- the 13th straight game and 14th in 16 this season that the opposition has outshot the Leafs. Former Devil David Clarkson almost scored on the Leafs first shot, cruising in from the slot while protecting the puck from a New Jersey defenceman. His shot got past Schneider but a Devil poked it away before it could trickle over the line. Toronto had several glorious chances to go ahead on a power play late in the first period that started with a four-minute high-sticking penalty to New Jerseys Mattias Tedenby and turned into a 44-second five-on-three when Peter Harrold was called for tripping. The Leafs came very close but could not take advantage. Clarkson, meanwhile, renewed acquaintances by trading hacks with defenceman Marek Zidlicky after a stoppage. Toronto had a sluggish start to the second period with an overly elaborate Kessel continuing to give the puck away. Bernier had to be sharp on several occasions as Toronto, after outshooting the Devils 8-7 in the first period, was outshot 15-8 in the second. Devils forward Stephen Gionta was helped off the ice in the second period after sliding awkwardly into the boards. Hard-nosed Toronto forward Colton Orr, who missed the morning skate in what was deemed a "maintenance morning," did not play. Instead the Leafs dressed seven defenceman with Mark Fraser returning from injury. ' ' '

UFC 175 will play a very big role in Chris Weidmans career. It will either be the night he proves it wasnt just luck that got him the belt or it will cement the fact that he isnt worthy of being among the great champions. Either way you look at it, two belts are on the line Saturday night, and the card has a few interesting fights for fans. This is how Gabby McAlpine and Jordan Cieciwa see the night playing out. Follow Gabby @WebSodaGirl and cheer for #TeamGabzilla, or you can back #TeamJC and my picks @FitCityJordan Chris Weidman (11-0-0) vs. Lyoto Machida (21-4-0) JC: Thankfully Machida is not known for his leg kicks. I never want to see video like Anderson Silva breaking his shin again, thank you very much. This is the night that Weidman proves himself. However, I think Machida will play the spoiler. Weidman has the advantage in wrestling, but look what Machida did to the last wrestler he met. He destroyed Munoz, and thats no easy task. I think we are looking at a Machida who wants to get back to his winning ways. Its going to start here with Weidman. Look for a very decisive win for the contender. Hell get his timing, and a third round KO. Gabzilla: Chris Weidman will get this; I have sat with Chris and have had the fortunate opportunity to really chat with him. People say his last two fights were flukes. The knock out and the broken leg... I dont think so. We are in the new age of a champion. I believe in him and nothing can stop him now. Ronda Rousey (9-0-0) vs. Alexis Davis (16-5-0) JC: Here is the problem with this fight. Rousey is just simply outstanding. No one in her division has got to the point where they are just purely dominant. She does not have an equal yet. That is just part of the evolution of womens MMA. Someone will put the time in, and have the killer instinct, I dont think its Davis, not yet anyway. Rousey made it clear last fight that she answered the critics by improving her striking, leaving her game without any holes. She is just too dominant right now to let Davis take the belt. It will be a good fight, Davis is skilled. She just wont get the win. This is probably going to be another first round arm bar. Gabzilla: I dont think any woman in the division has a chance against Rousey. Lover her or hate her, she is here to stay Stefan Struve (25-6-0) vs. Matt Mitrione (7-3-0) JC: I am very excited to see Struve back in the cage, and really think the Martine fight is the only match up that makes sense. Martine is skilled and building a solid career in MMA. He knocks people out, and makes fights exciting. However, Martine is susceptible to the submission game. Those long legs of Struve and the fact that hes a smart fighter, I see this heading to the mat. Very similar to the win against Pat Barry, I see this being a solid triangle choke win for the Dutch Giant. Gabzilla: I think Matt will take this one. Struve is a giant... He has amazing reach and has won by sub. But I dont think he will be able to manage the power of Martine. Think Matt takes the win by KO Uriah Hall vs. Thiago Santos JC: Uriah Hall just doesnt seem to be there for the big show. If he hasnt gone back to his gym and really turned it up for this fight, I cant see him getting past Thiago Santos. Hall is a terrific wrestler, but it hasnt translated yet to the UFC cage. My fear for Hall is that he looks flat again, loses to Santos, and finds himself out of a job with the UFC. Im sure being 1-2 in his last three fights has done everything but impress the brass at the UFC. Time will tell, and Thiago Santos is the perfect test to see if Hall belongs in the UFC or not. He is fighting for his job, so he may bring that next level wrestling. I see this ending in a decision with Santos being the victor. Gabzilla: Hall won his last fight against Lebed but who hasnt beaten Chris... Halls start in the UFC after TUF has not been good. He has not lived up to the hype Thiago Santos is hungry and will win over hall. CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Marvin Jones usually tosses his receiver gloves into the stands on his way to the locker room, a way of letting fans share in the moment. This pair -- and this moment -- was all his. Jones caught four of Andy Daltons career-high five touchdown passes on Sunday as the Cincinnati Bengals drubbed the New York Jets 49-9, a dominant performance that will turns heads around the NFL. As Jones ran off the field, he turned down the fans who wanted a keepsake glove. "Im keeping those," said Jones, who had career highs with eight catches for 122 yards. "Ill frame em or whatever. I usually dish them out. Not this game." The second-year receiver and third-year quarterback went into the clubs record book as its top touchdown combination. Jones set a Bengals record for touchdown receptions, scoring on catches of 9, 6, 17 and 6 yards. Hes the first NFL receiver with four touchdown catches in a game since Randy Moss and Terrell Owens did it in 2007. Daltons five touchdown passes gave him 11 in his last three games, his best such span. Hes the first quarterback to throw for five TDs against the Jets since Dan Marino in 1988. "This is where I want to be," said Dalton, who was 19 of 30 for 325 yards in little more than three quarters. "This is how I want to be playing. Its tough to do." The Bengals (6-2) won their fourth in a row and padded their AFC North lead by taking advantage of New Yorks step-slow pass defence and its rookie quarterback, who had his worst day yet. Geno Smith threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns before heading to the bench early in the fourth quarter. It was Cincinnatis most lopsided victory during coach Marvin Lewis 11 seasons. The Bengals are 2 1/2 games ahead of second-place Baltimore, which had its bye week. "It is a statement," defensive end Carlos Dunlap said. "This is one of the first games we were able to finish because we jumped on them early. This was just a statement game." New York (4-4) couldnt break its pattern of win-one, lose-one. The Jets took their most lopsided loss since a 45-3 loss to New England in 2010. "Its been up-down, up-down all year," said Smith, who was 20 of 30 for 159 yards. "Thats the way its been so far. Sometimes we do it, other times we dont. Thats a part of developing consistency." This one slipped away fast. The Bengals got touchdowns on their first two possessions while the Jets managed only 1 net yard in the first quarter -- their fewest for a quarter since 2009. The Bengals figured they could take advantage of New Yorks man-to-man coverage by throwing deep. Daltons line gave him plenty of time and he was on target most of the time, setting up a lot of big plays. The biggest came from Jones, a fifth-round draft pick with a lot of speed. In his breakout game, he showed a good pair of hands and a few nifty moves, too. His 30-yard catch set up Daltons 4-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jermaine Gresham, who was uncovered in the back of the end zone. A.J. Green also had two catches that went for more than 50 yards each as Dalton showed he can complete the long throw -- one of his biggest deficiencies in his first two seasons. "I would say that absolutely surprised me," coach Rex Ryan said of his defences collapse. "We got beat in every coverage known to man. Five touchdown passes? I dont know how many times thats happened in my lifetime. Not very often." Smith showed hes still got an awful lot to learn. With the Jets trailing 28-6 coming out of halftime, Smith made two more glaring mistakes. Chris Crocker returned his first pass of the second half 32 yards for a touchdown. Early in the fourth quarter, Adam "Pacman" Jones ran another back 60 yards for a score, sidestepping the diving Smith to reach the end zone. Smith has had three interceptions returned for touchdowns in the last two games. New Englands Logan Ryan ran one back 79 yards for a score during the Jets 30-27 overtime victory last week. Notes: Bengals MLB Rey Maualuga was taken off the field on a cart in the first half after hurting his left knee and apparently suffering a concussion while trying to make a tackle. Coach Marvin Lewis said Maualuga wasnt seriously injured. ... It was the first time the Bengals returned two interceptions for a touchdown since Dec. 16, 1984, against Buffalo. ... With Cooter on the staff, the Broncos ranked first last season in total offensive yards per game (465.3), total touchdowns (76) and points per game (37.9). Eller said the Oilers were a "junior team" that was "all over the place" before Edmontons 4-3 victory over Montreal on Tuesday night, Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins took offence to Ellers comments and used it to motivate his youthful team. "When youve got some young player whos trying to get his feet wet calling an organization a junior team, people take notice," said Eakins. "I knew it was going to turn. It makes for great banter in our dressing room. "That is a total hockey god thing. Im sure that young man has learnt his lesson, and I highly doubt youll see anything like that out of his mouth again." Eller, Montreals leading goal-scorer, had only one shot on net and didnt earn any points in the loss. "Hes a young player," said Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien of Eller. "I think hell learn from that. He made inappropriate comments." Ales Hemsky and Ladislav Smid both scored in the second period for Edmonton (3-6-1) to tie the game 2-2. Jeff Petry and Ryan Jones then had back-to-back goals in the third to give the Oilers a 4-2 lead. Tomas Plekanec and Brendan Gallagher struck in the first period to give Montreal (5-4-0) the lead and Brian Gionta scored with three seconds left to play. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was at the heart of Edmontons turnaround with two assists. "I got a huge momentum boost from (Eakins) talk between periods," said Nugent-Hopkins. "That was big for us. I thought we responded well. "Its what we needed at that point. We were losing battles, we werent playing with the passion that we need to win games in that situation." With the win, the Oilers ended a six-game road trip on a high. They went 2-3-1 on that stretch, and sit in last place in the Pacific Division. Plekanec put the Canadiens on the board first when he scored a power-play goal at 16:36 of the firrst period.dddddddddddd Andrei Markov started the play, showing great vision with a diagonal cross-ice pass from the blue-line. Plekanec made no mistake slotting home his fourth goal of the season between Devan Dubnyks legs. Rookie Michael Bournival got an assist on the play. Gallagher increased Montreals lead less than two minutes later. Gallagher intercepted a poor clearance by the Oilers Jones and beat Dubnyk glove-side with a quick wrist shot. Edmonton answered with two goals of its own in quick succession. Hemsky scored the first at 12:50 of the second period, getting around Alex Galchenyuk with ease and beating Price above the shoulder. Smid then tied the game 2-2 with his first of the year, when he put the rebound of a Nugent-Hopkins shot into a gaping net at 15:37. Edmonton completed the comeback when Petry scored at 7:59 of the third. Nugent-Hopkins pretended to shoot on a 2-on-1, but instead dished the puck to Petry who made no mistake from close range. Jones put the game out of reach, scoring the eventual game-winner at 9:57. Brian Gionta scored a late consolation goal for the Canadiens with three seconds remaining. "We cant expect to play one period and win," said Gionta. "We had a great start, we did what we wanted to, we stuck to our game plan for the first period, and we didnt adjust after that. "We have to do a better job of finding a way to play 60 minutes." The injury-plagued Canadiens were without the services of Max Pacioretty, Brandon Prust and Daniel Briere. All three forwards sustained injuries last week. Edmonton was missing star forward Taylor Hall and veteran Ryan Smyth. Hall, who injured his knee on Saturday in the Oilers win over Ottawa, is expected to be out four weeks. Rookie defenceman Nathan Beaulieu, who was sent down to Hamilton on the weekend, was recalled by the Canadiens and played in place of Jarred Tinordi. Beaulieu finished the game with three blocked shots and 11:26 of ice time. ' ' '

Less than three weeks after signing Andrew Bynum, Indiana sent Danny Granger and a 2015 second-round draft pick to Philadelphia in exchange for former first-round pick Evan Turner and forward Lavoy Allen. The teams confirmed the deal late Thursday after the NBAs league office approved it. The draft pick originally belonged to Golden State. Yahoo! Sports first reported the trade. Indiana now adds two young forwards -- players who could help them as they attempt to dethrone two-time defending NBA champion Miami and finally win their first NBA title. But they had to give up Granger, a fan favourite who was once considered the face of the franchise. "We thank Danny for his 8 1/2 seasons with us and we appreciate everything he did for us in his time here," president of basketball operations Larry Bird said in a statement. "We felt we needed to make this trade to strengthen the core unit and our bench. In Evan and Lavoy, we think we got two really good players that can help us and we look forward to what they can bring." What the rebuilding 76ers are getting is 30-year-old forward who missed all but five games last season with a knee injury and almost the first two months of this season with a strained left calf. Granger, who led Indiana in scoring for the five straight seasons before his knee injury, also has an expiring contract, and Philadelphia will get another pick in a draft many believe will be rife with talent. The trade also could help teams on both ends of the NBAs spectrum. Indiana has now picked up three former 76ers this month -- Bynum, Turner and Allen -- in an effort to add more scoring punch for their expected playoff showdown with Miami. The Pacers already have the best record in the East (41-13) and lead the Heat by two games in the chase for home-court advantage. Philadelphia, meanwhile, went into Thursday with the second-worst record in the league at 15-40 and now appears poised to make a run at surpassing Milwaukee for the worst mark in the NBA. In a fluurry of moves, the 76ers picked up a handful of draft picks, a few veterans and lost two of their top four scorers.dddddddddddd Turner, a 6-foot-7 guard, was the No. 2 overall draft pick in 2010 after winning college basketballs player of the year award. He was averaging a team-high 17.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists and could become a free agent after this season. He has averaged of 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game in 3 1/2 NBA seasons. Granger was averaging 8.3 points since returning from a strained left calf in mid-December, but he has career averages of 17.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists. He played in the 2009 All-Star Game and was voted the leagues Most Improved Player in 2008-09. The 76ers also sent Spencer Hawes, their top rebounder, to Cleveland earlier in the day. He was averaging 13.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in the final year of his contract. But Philadelphia certainly loaded up on second-round picks. In addition to getting Indianas choice, the 76ers also acquired two second-round picks, forward Earl Clark and centre Henry Sims in the deal with Cleveland and added guard Eric Maynor from Washington in a three-way deal that netted a 2016 second-round pick from Denver and a 2015- second-round pick from New Orleans. And the usually cost-conscious Pacers now look like they are loading up on big bodies for the playoffs. Theyve added the 7-foot Bynum, a former All-Star who missed all of last season in Philly because of knee injuries. This season, he signed with Cleveland as a free agent before getting traded to Chicago and then released. Indiana signed Bynum on Feb. 1 and though he has not played, coach Frank Vogel said he didnt expect Bynum to play for a few weeks. Allen, a 6-foot-9, 255-pound forward, was averaging 5.2 points and 5.4 rebounds with Philadelphia. To clear room on the roster, Indiana waived Orlando Johnson, a second-year guard they obtained in a draft night trade in 2012. "Orlando is a great kid," said Bird. "We appreciate everything hes done for us and hope he has a long and successful career." ' ' '

"The Bills are not for sale, and he has too much respect for Mr. Wilson to engage in any discussions of buying the team," Ken Sunshine said, referring to Ralph Wilson, the teams Hall of Fame owner. Saying Bon Jovi has "a day job thats doing very well," Sunshine added: "Its preposterous to say hes had any discussions with the Bills and Erie County." Sunshine spoke by phone a day after CBSSports.com posted a story citing unidentified sources that Bon Jovi is among the parties positioning themselves to purchase the Bills after Wilsons death. Wilson, who turned 95 last month, has maintained he has no interest in selling the franchise during his lifetime. Sunshine didnt deny Bon Jovis interest in one day being an NFL owner, saying his client has made that no secret. Bon Jovi has developed relationships with several NFL power-brokers, including New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. His interest in football went so far as to lead a group to establish an Arena Football team in Philadelphia in 2004. Bon Jovi owned the team through 2009, when the AFL folded for one season. The future of the Bills is always a hot topic of discussion and speculation given Wilsons age and because he has ruled out the possibility of his family taking over the team after his death. The Bills will instead be sold, though that sale would likely be put off for a few years, with the franchise being operated through a trust. Wilson, who lives in suburban Detroit, has already scaled back his control of the team. On Jan. 1, Russ Brandon was promoted to the position of team president, giving him full control of the franchises day-to-day operations.dddddddddddd The teams short-term future in Buffalo was also secured in December, when the Bills signed a 10-year lease with the state and Erie County to continue playing at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The $271 million deal includes a provision that essentially locks the Bills in for the next seven seasons. The franchise would have to pay $400 million if it decides to leave before 2020. The team then has the option of buying out the remaining three years of the lease for $28 million. Several groups have expressed interest in purchasing the Bills, including one led by Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly. In response to the report regarding Bon Jovi, the Bills released a statement on Sunday, saying: "The organization does not respond to reports of the interest other parties may have in ownership or of speculation concerning various groups that may have such interest." Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz also issued a statement Sunday saying hes had no discussions with Bon Jovi. Sunshine disputed another portion of the CBSSports.com report, which cited unidentified music industry sources as saying Bon Jovis pursuit of an NFL team was likely connected to the dismissal of the bands longtime lead guitarist, Richie Sambora, in April. Sunshine said the split had nothing to do with Bon Jovis NFL aspirations and referred to previous reports that Sambora was never fired. He noted the guitarist said he was dropping out of the bands world tour because of "personal issues." Last week, Sambora told TMZ that hes been in contact with Bon Jovi and indicated he is open to rejoining the band. The Bills (4-7) are coming off their bye weekend off and preparing to host Atlanta in Buffalos annual "home" game at Toronto on Sunday. ' ' '
